Frontiers in Optics
90th OSA Annual Meeting
October 8 - 12, Rochester
An extraordinary range
of learning opportunities and events are in store for attendees at OSA
FiO, including over 600 technical talks and poster sessions, talks about
Global Issues with Optics Solutions, and awards for distinguished research.
Eight themes run through the conference:
- Optical Design & Instrumentation
- Optical Sciences
- Optics & Biology in Medecine
- Optics in Information Science
- Photonics
- Quantum Electronics
- Vision & Color
- Laser Science
Exhibitors are up 14% for the conference, from 84 in 2004 to 96 this
year. Some events associated with the Conference which will be of particular
interest to members and exhibitors alike will be:
Glass
Cartel Clambake, to be held on Monday evening the 9th. No tickets
will be available at the door. As of today 180 are registered.
RRPC/New
York Photonics reception to be held at High Falls on Tuesday night.
The City of Rochester has scheduled a special Tuesday night exhibit of
the High Falls Laser Light Show at 8:30PM to conclude the reception.
Science
Educator's Day, to be held on Thursday the 12th. A program committee
of twenty scientists, researchers, optical designers and educators have
put together a terrific program to teach science educators how to get
their students excited about optics.
The OSA Career Center, where
companies will be recruiting for both national and regional job openings.
RRPC is going to have a recruitment table in the Career Center. Its purpose
will be to represent our membership and their job postings.
It is important that you send your job listings to Rick Rivers by Friday,
October 6th. We would also benefit from any Power Point presentations
or videos that your company has that promote your firm. Please help us
with this effort!
Thursday, October 12, is a special day with a separate registration fee
of $150. This day is open to anyone from the Upstate New York Community.
8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. there will be a symposium covering Commercialization
of University and Orphan Technologies.
The Women of OSA luncheon on Wednesday is sold out,
but rumor has it that a very interesting announcement will be made during
the luncheon. It may have something to do with encouraging science and
math among girls nationwide, like
this.
OptiFab 2007
Post-Deadline Commercial Abstracts May Still be an Opportunity
Organized jointly by SPIE and APOMA, Optifab 2007 is held in conjunction
with
the largest optical manufacturing product and supplier exhibition held
in the United States. With a unique technical focus on classical and advanced
optical manufacturing technologies, Optifab 2007 offers conference attendees
an exceptional opportunity to interact with worldwide experts in the field
of optical fabrication. This dynamic conference format includes:
- Technical papers on the latest technology, product, and process innovations
(abstracts are well ahead of 2005's Conference numbers)
- Commercial presentations on leading edge manufacturing and testing
products with an emphasis on aspheric fabrication and testing. (There
are still opportunities for submission on this track: think about it!)
- Practical short courses specifically of interest to optical manufacturing
specialist
The New York Photonics community still has a unique opportunity to present
commercial presentations to an international audience.
The OptiFab 2007 exhibition is the only exhibition in 2007 showcasing
optical manufacturing technology, coatings and metrology.
"Participating at OptiFab delivers in
a few days the benefits of four weeks of visits across three continents.
Can you and your company afford to miss it?"
--John Nemecheck, Fisba Optik LLC
This is the one SPIE conference where it makes sense to bring all of
your production team so they can interact with equipment manufacturers,
suppliers and fabrication partners. Exhibition contracts can be downloaded
by clicking
here or requested at spiesales@spie.org
If you need to speak to someone from within the industry, Jim Sydor at
Sydor Optics and Rick Nasca at Corning Tropel , both APOMA members, are
good contacts for the exhibition. Jay Kumler of Coastal Optics is your
contact for the technical conference at (561) 881-7400 ext. 114.

RIT CIMS Conducting Annual Survey
Respond to the Survey!
It is critical that all members respond to the industry survey which
was sent out in September. The results are strictly confidential and will
only be available to the membership in aggregated form, showing total
numbers for our industry.
Your quick and accurate response is necessary for our efforts in workforce
development, education, and legislative action. Please make certain that
your survey response is tallied and returned ASAP.
Workforce Development
Post Your Job Listings
To date, a search of America's Job Bank, the database used by the regional
career centers for job searches, displays a list of 13 job openings among
RRPC members. We all know that there a greater number of openings available.
It is important that the person responsible for recruitment at your firm
post openings at Rochester
Works! site, or contact Claudia Gately
Grant Opportunity
First Funding from WIRED
The Finger Lakes Partnership has announced its first funding opportunity
for businesses since the collaborative was awarded
$15 million February 1st as part of the U.S. Department of Labor WIRED
Initiative. WIRED (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development)
is intended to help create high-skill and high-wage opportunities for
workers in the Finger Lakes Region.
The Partnership will award a total of $650,000 to companies in the following
industry clusters to improve worker skills: optics and imaging,
biotech and life sciences, food and agriculture, alternative energy and
advanced manufacturers in the region. Business services and healthcare
organizations are also encouraged to apply for funds to train employees
in process improvement initiatives such as Lean, ISO and Six Sigma.

Fall Vision Meeting
The 6th annual Optical Society of America Vision
Meeting is sponsored by the Center for Visual Science at the University
of Rochester. The meeting will be held at the University of Rochester
Medical Center on October 6, 7, and 8.
As in past years, the Optical Society of America will offer a one-day
"free pass" to all OSA members who are pre-registered for the
OSA Vision Meeting to attend the OSA Annual Meeting on Monday, October
9.
The meeting is organized around 7 workshops, each with 4 speakers and
a format designed to promote active discussion of key issues in vision
science. Each workshop will end with 30-40 minutes of general discussion
of the issues presented.
Lumetrics On Track
Gains CE Certification, Strengthens International Presence
Lumetrics announced CE technical approval for the company’s OptiGauge
system. The CE Marking applies to products regulated by certain European
health, safety and environmental protection legislation. The CE Marking
is obligatory for products it applies to: the manufacturer affixes the
marking in order to be allowed to sell their product in the European market.
“Gaining CE certification is a critical step in conducting business
in European markets”, says Steve Heveron-Smith, Lumetrics’
VP
of Sales & Marketing. “In conjunction with recent enhancements
to our OptiGauge it provides new tools for our expansion into international
markets.”
Separately, Lumetrics inked strategic sales partnership deals with manufacturers’
representative organizations to handle sales and marketing in Asia, EU,
and Eastern Europe.
Lumetrics’ OptiGauge system is a measurement platform that uses
a non-contact infrared optical approach to measure single and multiple
layer films and components simultaneously. Based on technology originally
developed by Eastman Kodak, the OptiGauge system can be used on the manufacturing
line, in the QA lab, or in both locations at the same time.
OptiGauge projects an invisible beam of eye-safe infrared light onto the
surface to be measured, and the reflected light from each of the individual
layers is used to determine the thickness. The system can gauge multiple
layers ranging from 12 microns to 8 mm thick at up to 200 Hz scan rate.
Eight OptiGauge probes can be multiplexed on a single system to maximize
efficiency and minimize cost
